Did Apple Remove Lebanese Village Names From Apple Maps?

Apple designed its maps to give users a streamlined, privacy-focused navigation experience. This app covers most areas worldwide. However, recent reports show that many southern village names in Lebanon are currently missing from Apple Maps. This begs the question: Did Apple remove Lebanese village names from Apple Maps? Apple says the claims are incorrect.

Apple Claims it Did Not Remove Lebanese Village Names from Apple Maps

The issue began when an X user, @EthanLevins2, posted an image showing blank areas of southern Lebanese towns on Apple Maps. Within minutes, this post quickly generated backlash. Many people quickly connected the missing village names to Israel’s recent military actions in the area.

An X user said: “@Apple It’s unlikely you’re going to listen, but fix your shit and quit helping Israel in its genocidal ambitions.” Furthermore, a popular X reviewer posted a video created by another user. This video highlights the missing village names on Apple Maps. The reviewer called on Apple to rectify the issue quickly, calling the situation “unacceptable.”

According to the International Cyber Digest, Apple has come out to debunk the claims that it did remove Lebanese village names from Apple Maps. The giant tech company says the blanked areas were never part of the detailed Apple Maps experience from the onset. This means the app’s upgraded version is yet to be available in the southern Lebanon region.

Bottom Line

Apple didn’t intentionally remove the village names, as several users claimed. Over the years, many Lebanese users have complained about thin Apple Maps data. Besides, Apple’s feature availability page has always emphasized that the turn-by-turn navigation tool and other features don’t work in Lebanon. All these claims just point out that the blank area wasn’t an intentional deletion due to Israel’s recent move.

Why is South Lebanon not on the map? The simple answer, as noted by Apple, is that the mapping experience is currently unavailable “in that region.” When asked how the company defines regional availability, Apple declined to provide an answer, according to WIRED Middle East.

Recall that Israel provided evacuation warnings and strikes across southern Lebanon in March. The timing of this backlash only reveals the wider context in Lebanon. Apple claims it did not remove Lebanese village names from Apple Maps. But since users are unable to find the areas, it’s normal for them to tag the experience as an “erasure.”
