Italy’s coastguard said Wednesday it had evacuated 26 people after a fire broke out on an oil platform in the Adriatic Sea, but no injuries or pollution have been reported.
Images published by the coastguard showed smoke but no flames on the Rospo Mare B oil platform, which is managed by the London-listed energy company Energean.
“The Italian coastguard is currently engaged in a complex operation following a fire that broke out on the Rospo Mare B oil platform from which there are no reports of injuries or traces of pollution at sea,” it said in a statement.
Twenty-six people had been evacuated from the platform affected by the fire and neighbouring platforms, which were cleared as a precaution, it said.
The air and sea operation included coastguard, fire service and naval vessels, and were aimed at containing and extinguishing the fire and monitoring any potential environmental consequences.
The Rospo Mare oil field is located 20 kilometres (12 miles) off the coast of the Italian region of Abruzzo, in waters that are 80 metres deep, according to the website of Energean, which was initially founded in Greece.
In operation since 1982, it consists of three platforms and a floating storage and offloading tanker to temporarily store production.
