France is to back a move led by Italy for the European Union to list the Iran’s Revolutionary Guards as a “terrorist organization”, the presidency said Wednesday, after the force was accused of taking a leading role in a deadly crackdown on protests.

France “supports the inclusion of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the European list of terrorist organizations,” the Elysee said.

The IRGC is seen as Iran’s ideological army with the mandate to ensure the survival of the 1979 Islamic revolution. It is already listed as a terror group by Australia, Canada and the United States but not yet by the EU or UK.
