German stocks defy economic gloom to hit record high

German stocks reached a record high on Tuesday as expectations grew that the European Central Bank could begin cutting interest rates as inflation slows.

The DAX index touched 16,538.05 points at around 1600 GMT, bucking a trend of gloomy economic data in recent weeks.
