Google Pixel is not showing the new January 2023 security patch update to some users. According to reports, those who bought the phone through ‘Google Fi’ appear to be the most affected.

Reports of Google Pixel not showing new January 2023 security update to users

Owners of different Google Pixel devices appear to be having difficulties updating their devices. They appear to be stuck on outdated security patches from 2022. The bug persists across various Pixel devices, from the Pixel 4 to the most recent Pixel 7 smartphones.

Due to some odd issues, users have been unable to update these devices to the latest January security patch. All seem to be stuck on the October or November 2022 update.

A user posted: “Hey @madebygoogle, why does my Pixel 7 Pro keep saying that it’s only getting the November update?”

There were many other reports related to the issue. “Any other P7P owners not able to get the December update? Mine is showing “up to date” with November dates for both the Play system update and the security update (build TD1A.221105.001),” posted another user.

This has some people concerned because a recent advisory stated that Pixel users should instantly update their smartphones in order to fix a recent issue.

A user on the Google support forum speculated that the updates may have been pushed back or canceled due to bugs. However, Google Fi support informed a user that updates on Fi-purchased devices could take a maximum of 100 days from the date of release.

Official response + potential workarounds

Luckily, Google Fi has replied on their official Twitter account. The company announced that the long-awaited updates will be released at some point.

There are also some potential workarounds that may come in handy.

You can install the latest release on your device by replacing the Fi SIM with a SIM card from another carrier. You will then be ready to download and install the most recent Android update on your phone.

After the update is completed successfully, you can revert to your old Fi SIM card.

You can also try to sideload the recent January 2023 update patch from this website onto your Pixel smartphones.
