Greek police and intelligence services have arrested a Georgian national suspected of spying on a military base on Crete that is used by US forces, media reports said Monday.

Prosecutors are investigating whether the suspect could have been acting for Iran, according to the ANA news agency.

The espionage is said to have been staged at the Souda Naval Base on Crete, where the USS Gerald R. Ford, the world’s biggest aircraft carrier, spent two days last week.

The suspect, a 36-year-old man, was arrested at Athens international airport, reported by ERT public television.

He was found with photographs of the base on his cell phone, and authorities are investigating whether he recorded the Gerald R. Ford’s movements, according to newspaper Kathimerini.

Greece’s Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis played down the threat from the case, however.

“There is no danger at the moment but we are obliged… to take preventive measures and remain on permanent alert,” he said in an interview with website in.gr.

The Souda Bay base is used by the United States and other members of the NATO alliance.
