Taiwan cancels flights, shuts schools ahead of typhoon

Hong Kong‘s weather observatory issued its second-highest typhoon alert at 6:20 pm (1020 GMT) on Friday over Super Typhoon Saola, which threatened to become the strongest storm to hit southern China in decades.

“The Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9, was issued at 6:20 p.m. This means that winds are expected to increase significantly,” the Hong Kong Observatory said, calling on the public not to go outside, to stay away from exposed doors and windows and to find safe shelter.
