Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become very important in our lives because it is touching and impacting many parts of our lives. AI is driving the fourth revolution, and it is thought it will have an impact as large as, or larger than electricity, steam, and computing. Using AI, objects can make various decisions and take various actions without the need for human input or interference. Mobility is the one area where we are seeing AI being used a lot and with the way things are going, there are still lots of unexploited opportunities for the use of AI in mobility. With the value of AI in the automotive industry set to top more than €10 billion in the next three years, it is important to examine how and where the money will be spent. Here is a look at some of the ways AI is being used in and impacting mobility.

Personalized Marketing

Targeted and personalized marketing helps businesses get the most out of their advertising budgets by showing customers ads that are highly relevant to them. Now, AI is being used to suggest ads that will be presented to drivers and their passengers through their infotainment system. AI can provide marketing for a point to stores, recharging stations, restaurants, and other businesses that sell products and services you would be interested in.

Manufacturing

AI is also changing the way vehicles are manufactured. There have always been some elements of AI and machine learning integrated into robotics to help make vehicle manufacturing more efficient and cost-effective. Examples include the automated guided vehicles which move materials inside warehouses and manufacturing plants without any human intervention.

Painting and welding robots have been used in manufacturing plants for decades, but they can now identify defects and adjust accordingly. Some manufacturers like KIA are coming up with new solutions, such as their exoskeleton that makes their workers stronger while also protecting them in their manufacturing plants.

Predictive Maintenance

With a vast majority of vehicles, you can take your vehicle in for routine maintenance or take it to a mechanic once it develops some mechanical problem. This is changing as more vehicles are being installed with various sensors that collect data on most of your vehicle’s systems. This data is then analyzed and AI can then predict when problems are coming up.

AI detects problems and alerts the driver or the vehicle’s owners of problems before they come up. This way, it helps drivers avoid being started when a vehicle malfunctions without warning. AI also helps avoid extensive damage caused by ignoring repairs or by not knowing whether the vehicle needs to be checked out in the first place. Some vehicle manufacturers are also partnering with technology companies to offer over-the-air updates and software for predictive maintenance.

Vehicle Autonomy

AI is being used extensively to help develop fully autonomous vehicles. Although it might seem elusive, a lot of companies are working on Level 5 autonomous vehicles that are the pinnacle of self-driving technologies. To get to this level, there will have to be several breakthroughs in machine learning and Ai applications. Computer science students and developers who want to work on autonomous driving and autonomous vehicles can complete a Masters in Computer Engineering at Kettering University Online. Their artificial intelligence for autonomous driving source within this degree offering provides theories and technologies in artificial intelligence that focus on machine learning, algorithms, and other topics that will help you come up with solutions and innovations in the vehicle autonomy field.

Insurtech

Insurance and AI both have something in common; they rely very heavily on being able to accurately predict the future. This is one of the reasons why they are overlapping, with AI being used to bring forth a new approach to various types of insurance. In mobility, AI is being used to assess a driver’s risk and their insurance caps, and to help drivers report vehicle damage for assessment after an accident.

Infotainment

AI is also being used to improve and enhance the functionality of the infotainment systems in vehicles. Due to advancements in AI, drivers can now control their vehicle’s infotainment systems using their voice and gestures. The use of voice and gestures means the driver does not have to lose focus when they take their eyes off the road to select the next song in a playlist to change radio stations. This increases the driver’s comfort as well as their safety and that of other road users.

Driver Monitoring

AI is already being used to identify individual drivers and to provide them with the most comfortable driving conditions. This includes adjusting things like their seat’s position, car temperature, mirrors, and many more.

Some tech companies are also developing AI that helps determine if a driver has the capacity to be on the road. These systems monitor the driver’s head position and movement, eye openness, posture, and other indicators of alertness. The system can warn the driver not to drive, to stay alert, or to even take a break if they have been driving for too long. Intelligent systems are also being used for posture management and monitoring, so they can deploy airbags the right way should a driver get into an accident.

Traffic Monitoring

Artificial Intelligence is excellent at extracting information from Big Data. This includes information such as traffic levels on certain roads on certain days, road conditions in different weather conditions as well as the best use of a given road under different conditions. It then comes up with models that can help drivers beat traffic by helping them avoid congestion and bad road conditions.

These systems have also been used to provide data on emerging traffic trends. A common use is alerting drivers of the side roads and other areas that may be clogged due to congestion on other roads. This allows drivers to find alternatives to these routes and avoid traffic as much as possible.

With how fast advancements in Artificial Intelligence are coming, we are likely going to see even more uses and applications of AI, not only in mobility, but in other areas of our lives. That said, AI is already doing a lot to improve and change mobility as we know it.
