Iranian authorities executed two men on Tuesday who were convicted of committing rape in the country’s north, the judiciary said.

The men carried out the assault in 2022 in Mazandaran province, according to the judiciary’s Mizan Online website.

The men, whose identities were not disclosed, were executed “after the Supreme Court upheld the verdicts”, it added.

Last month, authorities publicly executed a man convicted of raping two women in the northern province of Semnan.

Iran, which retains the death penalty for crimes including murder and rape, typically carries out executions by hanging at dawn.

Iran is the world’s second most prolific user of the death penalty after China, according to human rights groups including Amnesty International.
