Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced Monday her plans to dissolve parliament this week for a snap election, hoping for a stronger mandate to push through her ambitious policy agenda.

“Today, I, as the Prime Minister, have decided to dissolve the lower house on January 23,” she told a news conference.
