Preliminary data released by the health ministry on Tuesday revealed that Japan’s population decreased by a record-breaking 831,872 individuals in 2023.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, the number of newborns in the country plummeted to a record low, dropping by 5.1 percent to 758,631 during the reporting period.
This marks the eighth consecutive year of decline, with the figure remaining below the 800,000 threshold since 2022.
