Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Russia’s Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that South America should remain a region of “peace,” after the US ousted Venezuela’s leader Nicolas Maduro, a statement from Brasilia said.

During a 45-minute phone call, the leaders “expressed concern about the situation in Venezuela and reiterated the importance of South America and the Caribbean remaining zones of peace,” read the statement.
