More than 230,000 people attended the 24-hour wake for Brazilian football legend Pele, the club where he spent most of his career, Santos, said Tuesday.
Sao Paulo state police provided the turnout estimate, said a spokesman for the club, which hosted the wake in its stadium, the Vila Belmiro, before a massive funeral procession that will end at a cemetary where the player widely considered the greatest of all time will be interred in a private ceremony.
