Austrian police said the 18-year-old gunman, who opened fire near the Israeli consulate in Munich on Thursday, was suspected of having become “religiously radicalised” and had been investigated over terrorist links.

The suspect was known to authorities since February 2023 after injuring fellow students, the police said in a statement, adding that he was also suspected of having become religiously radicalised and participating in a terrorist organisation in the past.

The investigation into the man who has Bosnian roots was closed in April 2023, the statement added.
