Myanmar junta chief Min Aung Hlaing will attend a regional summit in Bangkok next week, a spokesman said on Thursday, a rare foreign trip outside of close allies Russia and China.

Zaw Min Tun, spokesman for Myanmar’s ruling junta, said the visit to the BIMSTEC gathering of South Asian countries plus Myanmar and Thailand offered “potential for peace” after four years of civil war.
