Several online retailers saw a sharp rise in demand for Nike Tech tracksuits after images began circulating of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro wearing the outfit following his detention by US forces, with multiple listings selling out within hours.
US President Donald Trump shared a photo showing Maduro blindfolded and restrained aboard a ship, dressed in a grey Nike Tech sweatsuit. Media reports said Maduro was detained during a pre-dawn operation while he was asleep and was initially seen in casual attire.
Although reactions to Maduro’s detention and the US strike were divided among Venezuelans and international observers, his clothing quickly became the center of attention, inspiring memes and videos across TikTok and Instagram.
Within hours of the images spreading, availability vanished across multiple sizes. As of now, the jacket is sold out in L Extra Tall, XL Extra Tall, XXL Extra Tall, 3XL and 3XL Extra Tall, while the trousers have run out in 3XL.
Google Trends data showed a spike in searches for “Nike Tech” shortly after the images were released, as screenshots and purchase links to the grey tracksuit spread rapidly on social media.
