A non-binary Biden administration nuclear official was charged with stealing a traveler’s luggage from the Minneapolis airport in September, Fox News published on Monday.

The accused named Sam Brinton is one of the federal government’s first gender non-binary employees and worked as a senior Energy Department (DOE) official.

As per court documents, Brinton was charged with felony theft after allegedly stealing a Vera Bradley briefcase worth $2,325 from a security checkpoint at the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport on September 16.

Brinton, who prefers they/them pronouns, was caught on surveillance footage snatching the suitcase and discarding the ID tag that identified the owner, according to the documents.

According to the court records, after the suitcase’s owner informed police, detectives reviewed video footage of the baggage claim and identified Brinton carrying the luggage.

They were seen using the bags on at least two subsequent visits to Washington, D.C., on September 18 and October 9.

Brinton said they ‘accidentally’ took someone’s luggage

Brinton initially denied stealing anything when the police contacted them to discuss the incident.

“If I had taken the wrong bag, I am happy to return it, but I don’t have any clothes for another individual,” Brinton first told the officer, reported The New York Post. “That was my clothes when I opened the bag.”

However, they later called the officer back after the initial conversation and confessed to not being “completely honest.”

The Biden administration official said they mistakenly took the wrong bag at the luggage claim area due to being tired.

Brinton stated that when they discovered the bag at their hotel, they knew it wasn’t theirs. But, they were worried that someone would suspect they stole it and didn’t understand what to do. They claimed to have emptied the luggage and left the person’s belongings inside the drawers of a hotel suite dresser.

The official was charged with felony theft of movable property without authorization, according to Alpha News, a local Minnesota news station.

Brinton was placed on leave around a month ago as a result of the allegations.
