Britain’s sacked ex-ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, is quitting the upper house of parliament, the speaker announced Tuesday, amid a growing political scandal over his ties to Jeffrey Epstein.
“The clerk of the parliaments has today (Tuesday) received notification from Lord Mandelson of his intention to retire from the House, effective from February 4 (Wednesday),” speaker Michael Forsyth told members.
The announcement came after British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said his government was drafting a law to remove Mandelson’s peerage and “would cooperate” with any police inquiries into the alleged leaking to Epstein of confidential government business.
