It is “critical” to start building up European gas reserves “as early as possible”, the continent’s network transmission operator ENTSOG said Thursday.
“Europe enters the summer injection season from a much lower storage level than in recent years, at a time when global energy markets and supply are under pressure,” said ENTSOG general director Piotr Kus.
“It is critical to start injecting gas as early as possible, even as early as April, and continue filling until November, to ensure adequate levels for the winter ahead,” he added as ENTSOG released its summer supply outlook assessing the possible evolution of supply and demand through to the end of September.
The latest assessment shows EU gas stock levels at 28 percent lower than the three previous years.
To replenish storage in time for the winter, the organisation said Europe would require higher LNG imports than previously observed, alongside increased utilisation of gas infrastructure as the conflict “is tightening global LNG availability and constraining the ability to refill storages.”
The reports said stress tests with limited LNG availability “underscored the critical importance of securing adequate supplies.”
