Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced an expanded investigation into the online chat platform Discord after it was reportedly used by the assassin who murdered conservative commentator Charlie Kirk. The probe falls under Paxton’s Securing Children Online Through Parental Empowerment (SCOPE) Act initiative, which targets online platforms accused of exposing minors to exploitation and extremist content.

Paxton accused Discord of enabling “extremist content, sexual exploitation, and addiction” to spread unchecked, claiming the platform has failed to meet its legal responsibility to protect minors. “Instead of preventing exposure to these evils, Discord’s actions have contributed to the growing wave of nihilistic violence all across our nation,” Paxton said.

The Texas Attorney General’s Office has issued a Civil Investigative Demand (CID) to Discord, seeking information on extremist activity, sexual exploitation of minors, online grooming, and the platform’s addictive nature. This follows Paxton’s earlier probe into Discord’s privacy and safety practices for young users.

The investigation aims to determine the extent to which Discord facilitated radicalization, sexual exploitation, and addiction among minors.
