The 5 Main Levels of Care in Rehab

When it comes to rehab, each person requires a different level of care depending on their specific situation and needs. What is rehab? It is the process of treatment that helps people recover from addiction and/or mental illness. There are many different types of rehab facilities, but they all typically offer five levels of care, including inpatient substance rehab.

Early Intervention Services

While this level of care does not yet involve rehabilitation, it is the critical first step in getting help. Early intervention services are for people who are struggling with addiction and they typically act as a precursor to treatment for those who run the risk of developing a more severe dependency on drugs.
Early intervention services typically include:

  • Assessment and diagnosis of addiction or mental illness
  • Treatment planning
  • Referrals to community resources

Outpatient Services

Outpatient rehab services are for people who do not require 24-hour care, but still require a hands-on approach to their drug use. Typically, outpatient programs meet once or twice per week for a few hours at a time. These services can include individual and group therapy, medication management, educational seminars, and support groups.

One major benefit of outpatient services is that they allow people to continue living at home and maintain their normal routine. It is also a more cost-effective option when compared to some of its more intensive counterparts.
Outpatient services are best for:

  • People with mild to moderate addiction or mental illness
  • People who have recently completed inpatient treatment and need additional support
  • People who cannot take time off from work or school to attend an inpatient program
  • People with stable living situations and a strong support network

Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs)

Intensive outpatient services and partial hospitalization programs are for people who need more care than is offered in outpatient services but do not require 24-hour supervision. IOPs typically meet three or four times per week for several hours at a time. In addition to the services that traditional outpatient programs feature, patients may also have access to vocational training, job placement assistance, and psychiatric care. While these treatments are more expensive than outpatient services, they are less expensive than inpatient rehab.

Inpatient Rehab

Inpatient rehab is for people who require around-the-clock care and supervision. This level of treatment typically lasts around one month. There are, however, certain cases in which patients only stay for two or three weeks and other cases in which patients are living in the facility for months. It depends on the drug a patient is addicted to. Heroin and meth users usually stay longer. However, there is a highly specialized Toronto methadone clinic that manages to rehabilitate the patients in much shorter spans using newly developed treatment methods and techniques.

Because inpatient rehab requires you to live in the facility, it can be a costly option. However, it does offer some of the most intensive treatment available and it is the only thing that can help some addicts. Inpatient rehabs typically have a lower relapse rate than other levels of care.

Inpatient rehabs are a good fit for those who have unstable living situations or who lack a support system. They are also unfavorable for those who have a highly-restrictive job or those who are unable to take a month off from work or school.

Detoxification Inpatient Services

Patients who require medically-assisted detox before they can begin rehab are at the highest level of care. Inpatient detoxification services are for people who are physically dependent on drugs or alcohol and need around-the-clock care.

This level of care is very expensive and detox can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Detoxing in an inpatient setting is the safest way to rid your body of all traces of the substance, however, and can be the difference between life and death for heavy drug users whose bodies have become accustomed to using them over years.

Regardless of the severity of your drug addiction, it is important to seek help. There are many different levels of care available, and each person’s needs will vary. It is important to find the level that fits your individual situation so that you can get the most out of rehab.
