Hungary’s top diplomat said he met on Friday with US President Donald Trump’s eldest son, who started a tour of Central and Eastern European countries in Budapest.
Donald Trump Jr. has no formal position in his father’s administration, but runs the Trump family business, which includes a growing cryptocurrency portfolio.
He is known for his ability to tap into the Trump base, often publicly weighing in on political matters.
“We had a brief informal meeting with Donald Trump Jr. this morning,” Hungary’s foreign minister Peter Szijjarto told a press conference.
“We didn’t negotiate anything, because he’s not an official representative of the United States, so I would describe it more as a conversation, and therefore we didn’t discuss any official matters there” he added.
Trump Jr. was invited to Budapest by a Hungarian businessman to “establish economic cooperation based on mutual business benefits,” according to local finance news site Portfolio, whose parent company organised events related to the visit.
Portfolio said that Trump Jr. will give a closed-door lecture and attend a banquet honouring him.
Trump Jr. visited Budapest last year, when he held talks with Hungarian Prime Minister Orban, who has cultivated warm ties with his “dear friend” President Trump.
According to multiple media reports, Trump Jr. was set visit several countries in the region in the coming days, including Bulgaria and Romania.
He was scheduled to participate in the “Trump Business Vision 2025” forum on Sunday, hosted by the digital assets platform Nexo in Sofia, organisers confirmed to AFP.
Israel’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Gila Gamliel, was also expected to take part in the event.
