The fate of two sailing boats carrying aid to Cuba remained unclear Friday with the US Coast Guard stressing it was not involved in the search after earlier having stated the boats safely crossed from Mexico.
Coast Guard spokesman Anthony Randisi initially told AFP that the US authorities had “received a report at 10:36 am (1436 GMT) today that the two vessels safely transited to Cuba.”
However, spokeswoman Nicolina Converso would not confirm this.
In what she said was an “updated” statement, Converso said that “there has been no request for US Coast Guard assistance.”
The “ongoing search” is being led by the Mexican navy, along with Cuban authorities, she said. “We remain vigilant and prepared to provide support if requested.”
Cuban and Mexican authorities have so far not confirmed any sightings of the two small boats that were carrying aid to communist Cuba’s battered economy.
