Uber is introducing a new feature called “Women Preferences” to offer women riders and drivers more options on its platform. This feature will debut in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Detroit over the next few weeks, according to a recent blog post from the company.

The goal, Uber says, is “to give women riders and drivers more choice, more confidence and more flexibility when they use Uber.”

Here’s what the new feature includes:

  • Request on demand: Women riders can view a list of nearby women drivers and choose one. If a longer wait is required, they can still choose a faster pickup with any available driver.

  • Reserve in advance: This allows women to pre-schedule rides specifically with women drivers.

  • Set a preference: Riders can increase their chances of being paired with a woman driver by adjusting their driver preference settings.

Uber drivers will also have the ability to enable a “Women Rider Preference” through a toggle, allowing them to be matched more frequently with women riders. The company says these updates were inspired by a similar program first launched in Saudi Arabia in 2019.

In comparison, Lyft introduced a similar set of features back in 2013, called Women+ Connect, aimed at better serving women and nonbinary individuals using its platform.
