Ukraine will hold a presidential election only when the security situation in the war with Russia makes it possible, a senior official in Kyiv told AFP on Wednesday, pushing back on the idea of ballot being swiftly staged.
“Elections must take place as soon as possible, but not before the security situation allows it. For now, Russian terror continues, and nothing indicates that Russia is interested in ending the war,” the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Citing unnamed sources, the Financial Times had earlier reported Ukraine was mulling the possibility of holding a presidential election within the next three months under US pressure.
