The prime minister of US ally Trinidad and Tobago on Monday rejected a threat by neighboring Venezuela to pull the plug on a joint gas project over her government’s hosting of an American warship.

In a message to AFP, Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said she would not give into “any blackmail from the Venezuelans” and would not give up “the fight against drug cartels.”

“Our future does not depend on Venezuela and never has,” she added, a day after the USS Gravely docked off the island of Trinidad for joint military exercises with local forces.
