US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has held talks with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, a Ukrainian presidency source told AFP on Wednesday.

The first visit by a member of US President Donald Trump’s cabinet coincided with a large-scale barrage of Russian drones and missiles on Kyiv that killed one person and wounded others.

Trump had announced the visit but declined to give details. Bessent is visiting ahead of a meeting between Zelensky and US Vice President JD Vance in Germany on Friday.

Trump confirmed this week that he will dispatch to Ukraine his special envoy Keith Kellogg, who is tasked with drawing up a proposal to halt the nearly three-year-long war between Russia and Ukraine.

Kellogg is expected to arrive in Ukraine on February 20, according to a source in Zelensky’s office.
