NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte referred to President Trump as “daddy” on Tuesday after video showed U.S. leader criticized both Israel and Iran for continuing attacks despite a ceasefire agreement.
Before departing for the NATO summit in the Netherlands, Trump accused both nations of violating the deal, claiming they had been fighting for so long they “don’t know what the f— they’re doing.”
“Daddy has to use tough language,” Rutte quipped in response to Trump’s remarks, a moment that quickly went viral in a video shared widely on social media.
Speaking alongside President Trump at the NATO summit in The Hague, Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the U.S. leader for pushing allies to significantly boost their defense contributions, saying it “wouldn’t have happened” without him.
On Wednesday, NATO leaders agreed to raise annual defense spending to 5% of GDP — a major shift that fulfills a long-standing demand from Trump.
“Today, we will decide to go to 5%,” Rutte announced. “We have to keep ourselves safe from our adversaries, but also because it’s fair to equalise with the United States.”
Turning to Trump, Rutte added: “This would not have happened if you would not have been elected in 2016 and re-elected last year… so I want to thank you.”
President Trump called the agreement a “great victory for everybody,” declaring: “NATO is going to become very strong with us. We’re with them all the way.”
