At least one person died after a parking garage collapsed in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday, Mayor Eric Adams says. Five people were injured.

Around 4:15 p.m., a building collapsed on Ann Street between Nassau and William streets. After the collapse, vehicles were piled on top of each other, Citizen app photo showed.

Rescue crews were dispatched to the scene after reports of people trapped inside, but the FDNY withdrew its personnel due to structural concerns. According to FDNY officials, the department has members on tower ladders, a robotic team with drones and a dog, and members on the ground conducting searches.

“As far as we can tell, there were six patients, six workers in the building at the time of the collapse,” said FDNY Chief of Operations James Esposito, adding that four were hospitalized in stable condition, one refused medical attention, and one tragically died.

Officials have evacuated the university building next to the collapsed garage.

“We have no reason to believe this is anything other than a structural collapse,” Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.

According to New York City Sheriff Anthony Miranda, the garage is where the New York Sheriff’s Department parks their vehicles, NBC New York reports.

According to New York City Department of Buildings records, there is one open hazardous violation from 2008 for cracks in the concrete, ABC7 NY reports.

New York Mayor Eric Adams was on his way to the scene, according to spokesperson Fabien Levy.
