American AI developer Anthropic is now offering the European Union access to its powerful artificial intelligence model Mythos, an EU spokesman said on Monday.

Anthropic has held back from releasing the model to the public over fears it could be a boon for hackers because it is reportedly adept at exposing and exploiting software weaknesses.

The European Commission, the EU’s digital watchdog, has been in talks for weeks to get access to the model, and the offer comes after EU officials met Anthropic executives last week in San Francisco.

“I can confirm that the commission had several productive meetings with Anthropic. We welcome the latest developments on potential future access,” EU spokesman for digital affairs Thomas Regnier said.

He said the overture, made to the EU’s cybersecurity agency ENISA in Greece, was the result of “the commission’s strong bilateral cooperation and engagement with Anthropic”.

“This latest development is of utmost importance to get a clear picture on the potential risks,” Regnier said of Anthropic’s offer, which was first reported by Bloomberg.

The conditions of how ENISA’s access would work still need to be ironed out including how much access Anthropic would get to the EU’s systems through Mythos.

Anthropic gave a tightly restricted preview to roughly 40 partner organisations under an initiative called Project Glasswing when it launched Mythos in April.

They included American tech titans like Amazon, Apple and Google. Outside the United States, Britain’s AI Security Institute also obtained access to Mythos.
