The Microsoft founder and an acclaimed billionaire has repeatedly warned the nation regarding consequences that arise from non-compliance of SOPs. In an interview with CNN, he emphasized that trade-offs should be made with regards to the covid-19 situation. United States is among the top countries most affected by the deadly pandemic.
Bill Gates says lockdowns should be prolonged till 2022
Bill Gates mentioned that the situation would start getting calm somewhere around the summer of 2021. He says that the risk may still continue till 2020. Bill Gates stated that the lockdowns imposed countrywide should be prolonged till 2022 to counter the threat of virus spreading. “About for another nine months, big public gatherings will still be restricted. But we can see now that somewhere between twelve to eighteen months we have a chance to get back to normal,” he said.
Bill Gates also said that the next four to six months will be crucial for the spread of coronavirus. He says that the forecast indicates over 200,000 additional deaths in the US over the period of the next four to six months. He urged citizens to take all possible precautions that can curb the spread of the virus.
The first vaccine was administered in the United States yesterday. However, it is important to note that it will take some time before the vaccine can be made available for the public. Moreover, it has still not been confirmed that the vaccination results in 100% immunity. It will naturally take time before the government can confidently claim that they have got the situation under control.
Prolonged lockdowns in 2020?
“Bars and restaurants in most of the country will be closed as we go into this wave, and I think sadly that’s appropriate,” said Bill gates in the interview. A prolonged lockdown in 2020 is likely to halter all movement but this step seems necessary given the rapidly growing cases. The world has been plunged into a second deadlier wave of the pandemic, a large number of deaths have been recorded in the past few weeks.
He further stated that the next four to six months “really call on us to do our best, because we can see that this will end and you don’t want somebody that you love to be the last to die from coronavirus.” This is true, people will need to sacrifice their liberty for the greater good of the community. A year of strictly following SOPs could result in significantly lesser amounts of deaths across the country.
