Boris Johnson tipped to become new NATO chief

After leaving No. 10, outgoing UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is being touted as a potential new Nato chief, despite warnings from Conservatives that he must stop encouraging about staying in power, according to reports.

Allies of Prime Minister have suggested that he could succeed Jens Stoltenberg as Secretary General of the NATO military alliance when the Norwegian steps down in September next year, according to the Daily Mail.

The high-profile position may be appealing to the Prime Minister, but he would have to resign as an MP to accept it.

It comes as other supporters continue a grassroots campaign to keep him at No. 10, according to the Daily Mail.

10,000 Tory members have signed a petition requesting that he be allowed to run in the current leadership election.

No. 10 has insisted that he will leave office in September, but Lord Cruddas, the Tory donor behind the campaign, has said that the PM is reconsidering.

Johnson has yet to publicly respond to the claim, which was first reported in the Telegraph UK.

However, his former ally Steve Baker advised him to resist any desire to reverse his decision.

According to a new poll, 70% of all voters believe he was correct to resign, though Tory voters are evenly divided, according to the Daily Mail.

Sir Charles Walker, a second senior MP, has suggested that party members be stripped of their ability to choose the next Prime Minister.
