Twitter dissolved its advisory group Trust and Safety Council on Monday, after nearly all key members resigned in protest of changes made by Elon Musk to the company.

The group was founded in 2016 and recently included 100 independent researchers and human rights activists.

The group’s Twitter page has been deactivated.

Twitter stated in an email to remaining council members that the company is entering a new phase, “we are reevaluating how best to bring external insights into our product and policy development work”.

“As part of this process, we have decided that the Trust and Safety Council is not the best structure to do this,” the company added.

Three members of Twitter’s Trust and Safety Council resigned last week, claiming that, contrary to Musk’s claims, the safety and well-being of Twitter users is deteriorating.

Eirliani Abdul Rahman, Anne Collier, and Lesley Podesta, who oversaw Twitter’s digital security, blamed Musk’s “free expression” stance.

Rahman and Collier have been council members since its inception in 2016.

Since Elon Musk took over the company and implemented a cost-cutting drive, roughly half of the social media site’s workforce – approximately 3,700 employees – have been laid off.

According to the company, it will continue to welcome the ideas of the council members in the future.

“We will also continue to explore opportunities to provide focused and timely input into our work, whether through bilateral or small group meetings,” said Twitter.
