Germany’s incoming chancellor Friedrich Merz said Monday that faith in the country’s democracy had suffered, linking it with increased support for the far right.

“Trust in our democracy has been damaged like never before in our country’s post-war history,” Merz said at a CDU party meeting, pointing to the rise of the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party.
