The iPhone 16 is just weeks away from being launched, but we’re already hearing rumors about the cameras in the iPhone 17, set to come out in 2025. Well-known leakers recently shared some details about the iPhone 17’s possible camera features and the improvements we might see.

It’s expected to bring a major screen upgrade, higher-resolution cameras, faster processors, and more. Let’s check out the potential release date, price, and expected specs and features of the 2025 iPhone.

iPhone 17 release date

The exact release date for the iPhone 17 hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s likely to be in Fall 2025. Apple has a consistent history with its iPhone release dates:

iPhone 15 series: September 22, 2023
14 series: September 16, 2022
13 series: September 24, 2021

Given this pattern, it’s reasonable to expect the iPhone 17 to be released mid-September to early October 2025. The announcement will probably come a few weeks before the release date.

As in previous years, there will be several models: the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Additionally, we might see a new model called the iPhone 17 Slim, potentially replacing the iPhone 16 Plus.

It might be released in September 2025

A September 2025 release date seems almost certain. Apple’s release schedule is highly predictable, and with the iPhone 16 series expected to launch in September 2024, we should anticipate the series in September 2025. There’s no indication that Apple will change this schedule.

iPhone 17 price

Just like their release dates, Apple is consistent with the pricing of new iPhones. While the exact price of the iPhone 17 hasn’t been confirmed, it’s likely to be similar to previous models.

It is expected to start around $799, with the cost increasing based on screen size and storage. The Pro versions will, of course, be more expensive.

Price of iPhone 17 Slim model

The price of the iPhone 17 Slim is one of the most debated aspects of this rumored device. Initial reports suggest it could be priced around $1,299, more at the high end of the smartphone market. If true, this figure might surprise many, considering the specifications, which promise a sleek design but don’t necessarily align with such a premium price tag.

Screen upgrades

The 2025 iPhone series screen is rumored to receive three notable upgrades. First, Mashable reports that it will feature Always-On 120Hz ProMotion screens on all models, a feature currently available only on higher-priced Pro models.

TechRadar notes that this new screen may drop its refresh rate from 120Hz to 1Hz, significantly saving battery life when displaying static content. Lastly, MacRumors shares that the screen will use a new “super-hard anti-reflective layer” to prevent scratches and screen damage, replacing the current ceramic shield technology.

Camera

MacRumors reports that the telephoto camera on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro Max will see a resolution increase to 48 megapixels, up from 12 megapixels on the iPhone 15. The Information notes that the rear cameras on the iPhone 17 Slim might be repositioned to the top center.

Additionally, MacRumors indicates that the front-facing selfie camera will be upgraded to 24 megapixels, up from 12 megapixels on the iPhone 15. Lastly, analyst Kuo Ming-Chi suggests that the iPhone 17’s camera lenses will feature 6 elements instead of the current 5, improving image quality, especially in low-light conditions.

Processor and chips

Each year, Apple introduces a new processor for the iPhone. Based on past trends, the series is expected to feature the yet-to-be-revealed Apple A18 processor. Additionally, HotHardware reports that the iPhone 17 will include an Apple-designed Wi-Fi chip supporting Wi-Fi 7. This would enable the phone to use the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz Wi-Fi bands simultaneously.

iPhone 17 features

Face ID

Ross Young, an industry analyst, says that the iPhone 17 Pro models will bring a big change to Face ID. Instead of using a camera notch at the top of the screen, Face ID will be embedded under the phone’s screen. While the selfie camera cutout would remain, moving the Face ID sensors under the screen would be a step toward eliminating the notch. And achieving an all-screen front on future iPhone models.

Physically larger phones

While not widely reported, HotHardware mentions that the iPhone 17 may see changes in its physical dimensions. It could become taller and skinnier with a 19.6:9 aspect ratio, compared to the current iPhone’s 16:9 aspect ratio.

A new lineup

In recent years, Apple has typically offered four models per iPhone generation: the standard, Plus, Pro, and Pro Max. However, if rumors are accurate, there could be significant changes to this lineup with the iPhone 17. And Apple might introduce new models like the Slim or Air.

According to multiple leakers, an iPhone 17 Slim /Air model could be released next year. It is expected to feature a large display, a 5mm thickness, and a single rear camera. Despite its high price, this combination of features will need careful branding from Apple, though the name “iPhone 17 Slim” seems well-suited for this model.

In July, a prominent industry source claimed that the iPhone 17 Plus may be discontinued in favor of a new, thinner model called the iPhone Slim. Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that this change is due to the Plus-size iPhones accounting for less than 10% of annual sales, making it the most viable option for removal.

Conclusion

The iPhone 17 Slim, possibly debuting in 2025, seems set to redefine Apple’s flagship phone experience. With a rumored 6.6-inch display and a single rear camera, it represents a shift from the usual focus on high-end specs to a sleek, ultra-thin design. While details on battery life and storage are still unclear, the Slim’s style and portability might attract many users.
