In the face of a new wave of Covid-19 infections, Israel decided on Wednesday to strengthen protection measures for the elderly while avoiding reimposing restrictions on the general public.

According to Xinhua, the announcement by Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett’s office came after a consultation meeting with Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz and senior health officials following an increase in the number of new Covid-19 infections since May.

“At this stage, it was decided to strengthen the protection system for the elderly population and nursing homes,” the statement read.

“Monitoring and testing of samples from sewer systems (to monitor the virus) will continue, as will the activities of the information collection system,” it added.

On Monday, the number of new coronavirus cases in Israel reached 3,731, the highest since April 25, prompting the Health Ministry to advise at-risk populations to resume wearing masks.
