Medina Spirit (Protonico), this year’s GI Kentucky Derby winner and GI Breeders’ Cup Classic runner-up, collapsed and died on the track at Santa Anita this morning.

Bob Baffert’s Lexington attorney, Craig Robertson, confirmed the development to WKYT.

Multiple reports confirm that Medina Spirit died on the track at Santa Anita from an apparent heart attack.

A video of the workout was sent to Jeff Blea, the equine medical director for the California Horse Racing Board (CHRB), on Monday morning. According to Blea, Medina Spirit appeared to labour at the end of his workout in the video.

“He looked like he was struggling the last part, and the rider was pulling him up,” Blea told Thoroughbred Daily News.

Since the Kentucky Derby, Medina Spirit has been in the news several times due to a possible disqualification.
