Financier and member of the Rothschild banking family, Lord Jacob Rothschild, has died at the age of 87, his family announced him dead. No cause was given.
The family referred to him as a “towering presence” and disclosed plans for his burial followed by a memorial service.
Rothschild, recognized for his roles in banking and finance, was also notable for his involvement in philanthropy, environmental causes, and support for Jewish charities.
He began his banking career with NM Rothschild & Sons in 1963 and later co-founded J Rothschild Assurance Group, now known as St James’s Place, in 1980.
In a statement, the family said: “Our father Jacob was a towering presence in many people’s lives, a superbly accomplished financier, a champion of the arts and culture, a devoted public servant, a passionate supporter of charitable causes in Israel and Jewish culture, a keen environmentalist and much-loved friend, father and grandfather.
“He will be buried in accordance with Jewish custom in a small family ceremony and there will be a memorial at a later date to celebrate his life.”
Jacob Rothschild married Serena Mary Dunn in 1961.
In 2002, the late Queen bestowed upon Lord Rothschild the title of Member of the Order of Merit.
