The Gamaleya National Research Center of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Russia has announced the start of development of a new version of the Sputnik vaccine adapted to target the Omicron variant of Covid-19.
According to Xinhua, Gamaleya added in a statement on Monday that the centre is investigating whether its Sputnik V and Sputnik Light vaccines can neutralise the Omicron variant as it believes.
If necessary, the new Sputnik Omicron version can be ready for mass production in 45 days, according to the centre, which hopes that a large number of Sputnik Omicron booster shots will enter international markets in early 2022.
