A shooting has occurred at New Hanover High School in Wilmington, according to a video obtained by Insider Paper. All students have been relocated. The incident reportedly happened around 11:00 AM on Monday morning.
In New Hanover County, a student was shot at a school.
Students from New Hanover High School were transported to a nearby middle school following the shooting, according to Lt. Jerry Brewer of the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
According to a New Hanover County Schools statement, the Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the incident is not an active shooter situation.
Students and staff were evacuated from New Hanover High School to Williston Middle School “due to a shooting,” according to school officials.
“Parents will need to pick up their children from the MLK Center once the school has done an accurate headcount,” a tweet from the sheriff’s office said.
A portion of Market Street is closed near the school.
“We are asking families and members of the community not to go to the building,” the school system said. “Law enforcement is currently on the scene.”
North Carolina’s Attorney General said:
Today’s school shooting near New Hanover High School is deeply troubling. My prayers are with the victim & family. The details surrounding this event are still forthcoming, but one thing is for sure: we must protect our kids from school shootings.
A video obtained by Insider Paper appears to show a fight break out on the catwalk before the shooting occurred.
Initially, a fight broke out between two students on the catwalk, according to video. The video pans to the opposite end of the catwalk, where another brawl broke out among other students, with dozens of student witnesses on the sidelines.
One of the students dragged another across the catwalk by his white T-shirt. Students began yelling, “No, no, stop, stop it,” before three gunshots were fired and the video was cut off.
