Much of the southwestern US state of Texas is bracing for record heat this Mother’s Day weekend, with temperatures in Houston, the state’s largest city, expected to reach the mid to upper-90s Fahrenheit on Saturday and Sunday.

According to a report from local media outlet mysanantonio.com, humidity will make it feel like it’s over 100 degrees in the Houston area this weekend, noting that most Texans are not prepared for the heat wave, which is forecast to have 93-96 degrees each day next week.

According to the Energy Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT), demand for power in Texas is expected to reach 69.3 gigatonnes on Saturday, as temperatures reach the low-to-mid 90s and exceed 100 degrees in parts of Houston and Dallas.

“That Texas summer heat is getting real too close for comfort,” a local resident complained on social media.

According to FOX News, the dangerous early-season heat wave will not only shatter dozens of Texas record highs, but it will also begin to build in the Southern Plains on Friday, peak in that region over the weekend, and then spread from Texas into parts of the Midwest and South next week.
