A man shot dead two people in a Kyiv suburb on Thursday in a dispute over the sale of a firearm, Ukrainian police said.

Police said the suspect, 63, had previously bought a weapon from a serviceman, who then demanded more money.

Amid the dispute, the suspect fired the weapon on the soldier and his mother-in-law, who was also in the house, killing them both.

“Police conducted a special operation and detained the shooter within an hour,” the agency said in a statement, also releasing a photo showing two officers holding the suspect.

The incident took place in Sofiyivska Borshchahivka, an urban district bordering Kyiv home to some 25,000 people.

Video footage posted by local media showed an ambulance and several police cars parked on a road behind residential buildings.

Ukraine, which is currently battling a three-year Russian invasion, has reported sporadic shooting incidents before but has a relatively low crime rate.
