Imagine waking up and noticing you have thousands of decreasing numbers of your followers. That’s exactly what many X creators are facing currently. Many have been asking why they are experiencing a decreasing number of followers on X. But this sudden decrease in follower counts could be due to a recent bot purge on the platform, according to new reports.
Why Are X Followers Decreasing So Fast?
A few days ago, Elon Musk and the X engineering team were vocal about their goal to clean up the platform from bots. According to an X reply from Nikita Bier, the company’s product head, more than half of the product team is actively working to reduce spam.
And it appears that the bulk suspensions of bot accounts on X have just begun. This has led to the “X followers decreasing” experienced by many creators. X suspends a lot of accounts on a whim because it thinks they are bots. While verified followers are increasing, some posts claim that many followers are disappearing. This implies that the great majority of bots may be disappearing.
A redditor, psilocyber98, posted in r/Twitter:“Just lost 20k followers out of nowhere.” Prince_of_web3 also claims to have lost 4k followers on X overnight due to this massive bot purge on the platform.
Real Humans, “Bot” Labels: The False Positive Problem
Unfortunately, the problem was that X followers were decreasing. It appears that numerous real accounts have also been caught in this frenzy. Many creators with audiences are claiming to have been suspended. The issue with the bulk suspension is that accounts with a lot of reposts, alt accounts, and NSFW accounts have all been classified as bots. In response to the bot issue on X, a Forbes article claims that OpenAI is working on using biometric tools as an effective method of determining whether a user is a bot. And may use these biometric tools to preserve and allow only real humans on the platform in the future.
Can You Do Anything About It?
Regretfully, a platform-wide cleanup cannot be “opt-out” of. If you notice a decline in your X followers, it’s most likely because X’s automatic systems flagged such accounts as breaking platform manipulation or spam regulations.
However, X has recommended that you get in touch with their support team if you think it was a mistake. The same thing applies if the platform suspended your real followers. But there is no guarantee yet that X will restore such accounts since they either take forever to respond or just close the ticket without a solution.
Nikita suggests that X is trying another route for people who feel it was a wrongful account auto-suspension. Face ID authentication would allow you to verify your account instead of the traditional email route. You can use your front camera to access Amazon Live Feed if your device does not support Face ID. It’s important to remember that this feature is still being considered, and Nikita’s wording implies that there is no assurance of its release.
