The World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Wednesday that Covid-19 testing and vaccination in Afghanistan have decreased since the Taliban took over Kabul in mid-August.
“Since August, COVID-19 testing + vaccination has declined across Afghanistan. Around 1.6 million doses of vaccine could expire if not used quickly,”according to the Xinhua news agency, the organisation posted on Twitter.
To address this, the WHO and its partners are increasing testing and assisting in the implementation of a vaccination campaign in 16 of Afghanistan’s 34 provinces.
According to the most recent WHO figures, more than 155,000 Afghans have been infected with Covid-19, and over 7,200 have died as a result of the disease since February 2020, when the first Covid-19 case was detected in the country.
