Danielle Kang has revealed in a teary interview that she has been playing in the U.S. Women’s Open for the first two rounds with a tumor on her spine. One of the top contenders this year, this news has come as a shock for several of her fans who have been pouring in wishes and heartfelt messages on her Twitter handle. The 29 year old golf player who is ranked 12th in the world further added that she got to know about the diagnosis only a few weeks ago and has been processing it since then. After the initial devastation, she also added how there have been multiple tests to ascertain if the tumor is the cause behind her back pain or just a contributing factor amongst others. Moreover, the doctors have also prescribed several tests which have been going on to determine if the tumor on her spine is malignant or benign. She has more tests in the next week and is still uncertain as to how many play sessions she will be missing because of them. Alarmed, several plans have also started praying for her. Nevertheless, the golf player shot a 3-over-74 on Friday, June 3, 2022, after a great opening session in Pine Needles and was around the cut line during the afternoon wave on course.

Since April 2022, Kang has been dealing with severe back pain which made her withdraw from the Lotte Championship. She also had to leave from the Palos Verdes Championship last in the same month and has not been able to compete since then. The back pain has increased, but she is under treatment by the best doctors in the country and hopes to recover very soon.

Kang is trying to be optimistic. When asked what she envisions ahead, she said that she was looking at crossing this week at the U.S. Open as her main goal. Her mind is not preoccupied with her test results or the tumor on her spine. Instead, all she wants to do is to play the game well and make the cut for the next week in the U.S. Open.

Considering she has not played in eight or nine weeks, the only mistake Kang made was a triple bogey on No. 1 and she seems to be pretty happy with that. When questioned about how she keeps on playing even with the searing back ache, she laughed and replied that she is distracting herself and playing through the pain because here on the golf course, she is doing something she loved dearly, and that is playing golf.

Kang has won six LPGA tournaments and became a golf pro in 2011. In 2017, she won the major Women’s PGA Championship. She has over $7.5 million in earnings.

Smiling and battling through the pain, Danielle Kang is an inspiration for so many today! May she get well soon.
