Dozens of students were held for hours inside a primary school in China after it was locked down after a staff member tested positive for Covid-19, according to the BBC.

On Tuesday night, a large group of parents gathered outside the school, anxiously awaiting news that did not arrive until nearly midnight.

According to the BBC report, the children were tested and reportedly told to stay in school overnight until their results were available.

The students were said to be between the ages of seven and twelve.

According to Jimu News, the school principal finally emerged around 11.30 p.m. and informed waiting parents that some of their children would have to be quarantined.

They were then instructed to pack clothes for the children who would be spending the night at school. The principal added that they would be released the next day after the results were released, according to the report.

It is unclear how many students were affected, but a news report by the Falun-gong-affiliated New Tang Dynasty Television outlet stated that 35 students were eventually quarantined.

The virus was tested on all teachers, students, and staff members at the school.

The school has been temporarily closed.
