Elon Musk, the tech billionaire, announced on Monday that Starlink, his rocket company’s satellite Internet division, is now operational on all continents, including Antarctica.

On the microblogging site Twitter, Musk wrote, “Starlink is now active on all continents, including Antarctica”.

He also stated that “another batch with lasers reaches orbit” after the company confirmed the deployment of 54 Starlink satellites.

According to a recent report, nearly 1,000 people live and work at the McMurdo Station in Antarctica during the summer, and they already have satellite internet, which is unreliable in harsh conditions.

According to the US Antarctic Program, there is currently a 17 Mbps link for everyone.

However, the internet service will be better and less patchy with Starlink, according to the report.

With the exception of Skype or FaceTime sessions once a week at a public kiosk or mission-critical communications, the McMurdo Station prohibits scientists from using Netflix or video calls.

Starlink has a speed range of 50-200 Mbps.
