The international campaign against Iran has further escalated through two major developments. The European Union has formally joined the United States’ economic operation, and South Korea is weighing military options in the Strait of Hormuz. The combined impact of economic warfare and a naval blockade will significantly weaken the already struggling Iranian regime.

EU Joins US Economic Operation against Iran

The “Operation Economic Outcast” by the United States plans to financially weaken Iran. The US-led sanctions campaign aims to exert economic pressure on and isolate Iran. Through aggressive measures targeting critical sectors such as oil, technology, and electronics, Iran is being effectively cut off from the global financial system. This is occurring amidst rising military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Disrupted global supply chains are causing energy prices to skyrocket across the globe. This is triggering inflationary pressures in the European Union. Scott Bessent, the United States Treasury Secretary, praised the European Union for joining the United States in applying “maximum pressure” on Iran. The objective remains to cut funding for Iran’s nuclear programme.

The European Union will now apply secondary sanctions on Iranian capital moving through foreign banking channels. This will result in losses for any foreign entity engaging in business with Iran. Moreover, Iranian cryptocurrencies and digital assets are also being targeted, while Iran’s access to sovereign gold reserves is being frozen. As part of disrupting Iran’s supply of goods, South Korea is also playing its part through military deployments in the Strait of Hormuz.

South Korea prepares for military deployment in Hormuz in a bid against Iran

South Korea has been heavily affected by the tensions in the Strait. Approximately 61% of its crude oil passes through the Strait, severely impacting its economy by disrupting the steady supply of Gulf energy.

South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense has officially confirmed that preparations are underway for a multidimensional deployment. If ultimately authorized, the deployment will span mine detection and clearance, air and logistical support, and potential naval warships. These measures will protect commercial tankers and also counter piracy stationed near Somalia.

Europe and South Korea form part of the dual-track strategy against Iran being employed by the United States. President Donald Trump was able to exert pressure on South Korea by cancelling joint military drills that take place annually. This was a clear indication that South Korea was not making enough efforts against Iran. Therefore, these actions by South Korea also signify its continued reliance on the security umbrella provided by the United States.

Implications of measures against Iran

The Iranian economy currently is collapsing and the country is grappling with hyperinflation at the moment. The increasing global pressures will further reduce the availability of consumer goods. Political analysts speculate that this will lead to massive civil unrest.

However, despite civilian backlash, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) maintains a hardline stance against the United States. In response to the global measures against Iran, the Iranian regime has hardened its stance on resistance.
