NEW UPDATE: Officials say a 1.7 magnitude earthquake is believed to have shaken residents awake in Roosevelt Island and knocking out power on Tuesday morning, ABC7 reports

PREVIOUS UPDATES:

Firefighters rushed to Roosevelt Island following reports of small explosions and later confirmed that the situation was contained, though the cause remained unclear, as per fire authorities.

Early Tuesday morning, residents from Manhattan and Queens reported hearing what appeared to be small explosions near Main Street, close to the Roosevelt Island Tramway. By around 6 a.m., the situation seemed to have been addressed. Despite a significant presence of FDNY personnel at the location, the origin of the ‘boom’ remained undetermined.

Residents say they were jolted awake by a loud noise and that they felt their buildings shaking.

“It was like an explosion, sounded like a bomb went off. The building shook, it woke us up. We called downstairs and they said it happened to all four buildings,” a resident said.

No casualties were reported in the incident.
