Germany’s president on Monday voiced understanding for demonstrations in China over the country’s tough coronavirus restrictions, as he urged authorities to respect protests and freedom of expression.
Recalling Germany’s own experience of lockdowns and curbs during the pandemic, Frank-Walter Steinmeier said he can “only imagine how great the burden is for people in China where the measures are much stricter, have been in place much longer and are still being enforced.
“That’s why I understand that people are expressing their impatience and their grievances on the streets,” he told broadcaster Deutsche Welle.
